TransPort Moody: updating our Master Transportation Plan

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

The City of Port Moody is updating TransPort Moody, our Master Transportation Plan (MTP), in response to new climate targets set in our Climate Action Plan (CAP) and new provincial greenhouse gas emission mitigation targets.

What Big Moves can we make as a community to better adapt our transportation system to climate change and lessen future climate impacts? Share your feedback to help us plan the actions we will take together!

This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada.

What is the Master Transportation Plan Update?

The current Master Transportation Plan sets a vision and broad strategies to reach our transportation goals. Given the new climate targets developed in our Climate Action Plan and new provincial mitigation targets, we will need bigger and bolder actions to reach these goals faster.

Master Transportation Plan - Goals (2017)
Climate Action Plan - Goals (2020)
By 2045, the City will double the proportion of trips (from 20% to 40%) made by Port Moody residents via walking, cycling, and transit to accommodate new trips related to growth
By 2030, residents walk, cycle, or take transit for 40% of trips
By 2045, the City will reduce by 30% the average vehicle distance driven (from 10 kilometres per day per person to 7) by Port Moody residents
By 2030, 40% of passenger vehicles and 25% of commercial vehicles are electric
By 2045, the City will reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities with the ultimate goal of eliminating all fatalities from the transportation system

We know we must do more to reach our Climate Action Plan goals faster and ensure our transportation system still meets the needs of our community today and in the future. This MTP update will include Big Moves to address the gap between where we are and where we want to be, as well as explore how our Big Moves can produce additional community benefits, such as less noise, more green space, and healthier lifestyles. As we update the plan, we must consider how our transportation system can be fair and fit all lifestyles, financial situations, and abilities.

An important part of this process is hearing from people with diverse perspectives about their lived experiences in Port Moody. Your participation is important for us to better understand the following principles that will support future Big Moves:

  • Bold leadership: Actions the City takes can make a difference. These must be bold and demonstrate leadership.
  • Strong vision: TransPort Moody remains a strong vision for the City but the goals and targets need to be expedited so that we achieve them faster!
  • Collective action: Actions that manage transportation demand and reduce vehicle trips are needed to meet our goals. This will require individual and collective behaviour change.
  • Measurable goals: The Big Moves must strive to be implementation-oriented and demonstrate a measurable mode shift and greenhouse gas reduction benefit.
  • Equitable outcomes: The Big Moves should seek to maximize co-benefits and provide the Port Moody community a roadmap toward a transportation system that fits all lifestyles, financial situations, and abilities.

Past engagement opportunities
In March and April of 2022, we asked you: what Big Moves can we make as a community to better adapt our transportation system to climate change and lessen future climate impacts? We received 164 community surveys and 44 submissions to our Ideas tool.

What we heard: read our Public and Stakeholder Engagement Summary (PDF) to find out what we heard from the community. Input from our initial phases of engagement has been shared with City Council for their consideration as we move toward updating the Master Transportation Plan. Thank you to everyone who participated. We value your input!

Big ideas: Thank you for contributing your bold and ambitious ideas to help us meet our Climate Action Plan goals! We've included ideas in our Public and Stakeholder Engagement Summary (PDF).

I have recently moved to Port Moody from Vancouver and I love all the cycle paths and marked lanes. I’m an avid cyclist and I don’t drive. When I’m doing errands on my bicycle, I’m very frustrated because there are very few bicycle racks where I can safely lock my bike. If the Master Transportation plan is to encourage cycling then we cyclist need to be able to lock our bikes safely when using cycle to do errands, not just for getting exercise.

Thank you for your comment about the Master Transportation Plan Update. We are still working on the equitable policies, programs, and projects that will be proposed as part of this initiative, but I agree that bike parking will be important for encouraging cycling throughout the city. We will take your comment into consideration going forward.

Is Spring Street part of the City’s alternative modes of travel (Cycle) network? I see there are multiple development proposals along Spring Street which, is designed properly could greatly enhance the cycle and pedestrian experience along that part of the network. Unfortunately I also see those development proposals all are locating their underground parking and loading bays along Spring Street which would increase vehicle / pedestrian and vehicle / Cycle conflicts and materially detract from one’s willingness to use that route to cycle (as it is presently the the only (relatively) safe route for kids that means back into the car). Thank you

Thank you for your question about the Master Transportation Plan Update, and sorry for my slow response as I am getting used to our engagement platform. The Official Community Plan identifies the Spring Street Promenade as a special area, and specifically recommends the section between Moody Street and Electronic Avenue as an area to attract walking and cycling. However, there is generally insufficient width to provide dedicated cycling facilities on Spring Street. The City is working on traffic calming to ensure Spring Street is a comfortable walking environment, and such improvements would generally also make it comfortable for cycling for most users.
