Active School Travel Plan

In 2022, the City of Port Moody launched the Active School Travel Plan for Mountain Meadows Elementary School as part of a multi-year School Traffic Safety Initiative program. The City worked with the school, students, and parents to review road safety, parking, street lighting, and transportation conditions along Upper Noons Creek Drive between Maude Court and Campion Lane/Cypress Place.

These are the top concerns expressed by participants:

  • vehicles are speeding;
  • drivers are not stopping at stop signs;
  • there is a lack of safe sidewalks and adequate crosswalks; and
  • there are poor visibility/sightlines for vehicles.

Based on these concerns, the following measures were recommended:

  • add painted sidewalk extensions with flexible delineator posts to convert existing road curb space near the school into more space for walking and cycling;
  • extend existing bus stops into the road at the sidewalk level (with ramps connecting from the road to the sidewalk level);
  • create "no stopping" zones and sidewalk extensions along sections of Upper Noons Creek Drive;
  • repurpose sections of Upper Noons Creek Drive adjacent to the school for loading/unloading during school pick-up and drop-off hours; and
  • maintain unrestricted parking along sections of Upper Noons Creek Drive south of the school.

The goal of this study is to design and pilot traffic calming measures between Maude Court and Juniper Place.
