Thank you to everyone who participated in our Suter Brook Village Traffic Improvements engagement. Consultation has concluded.

Our survey is now closed. City staff presented a report with the public engagement summary and recommendations at the May 10, 2022 Regular Council Meeting (Item 5.9). Thank you to everyone who participated!

Through past public engagement, the City heard residents’ concerns about traffic and public space issues in Suter Brook Village. City staff prepared a plan for improving these safety concerns and City Council approved the Suter Brook Village Traffic and Public Space Implementation Plan in December 2019. The implementation plan included new loading zone designations on Morrissey Road and piloting the change of Brew Street, between Morrissey Road and Capilano Road, to one-way traffic. However, COVID-19, as well as constraints on material availability and inclement weather, delayed implementation of the change to one-way traffic.

During the delay, City staff took the opportunity to collaborate with developer Onni on an updated plan that expands the traffic calming measures and allows for temporary pilot features to be constructed in permanent form at the developer’s cost after a monitoring period. The updated plan includes measures to prioritize pedestrians and slow vehicle traffic.

Suter Brook Village Traffic Improvements

Measure
Location(s)
Expected benefit
Permanent implementation of one-way street following a pilot period
Brew Street, between Morrissey Road and Capilano Road
One-way traffic operation reduces pedestrian conflicts and reduces vehicles circulating to look for on-street parking
Intersection improvements
Intersection of Murray Street and Morrissey Road
Extending the median eliminates left turns and u-turns. Removing the right-turn channels requires right-turning traffic to slow down when entering and exiting the village.
Raised intersection

  • Morrissey Road and Brew Street
  • Morrissey Road and Suter Brook Way
  • Suter Brook Way and Brew Street

Raising the intersection causes all vehicles traveling through the intersection to slow down.
Curb extension
  • Morrissey Road and Brew Street
  • Suter Brook Way and Brew Street
  • Capilano Road and Brew Street

Curb extensions reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians.
Raised crosswalk
  • Morrissey Road and Capilano Road
  • Capilano Road, west of Morrissey Road

Raised crosswalks improve pedestrian comfort and cause vehicles crossing the crosswalks to slow down.
Improved lighting
Near intersection of Capilano Road and Ioco Road
Brighter lighting improves visibility.
